William Clarkson enlisted on the 23rd September 1914, being killed in action at Serre on the 1st July 1916, aged 22.
He is buried in Euston Road Cemetery at Colincamps on the Somme, just behind the British lines; on his grave is the inscription “Thy will be done”.
A single man, William was the youngest son of Thomas and Ellen Clarkson, having three sisters and four brothers. He was born in Chorley and lived most of his life at 188 or 190 Moor Road.
William worked as an Overlooker at Croft Mill in Chorley and attended All Saints Church.
