Richard Snape joined the Pals in June or July 1915 as a Stretcher Bearer; he also played the Clarinet in the Battalion Band. Like almost all the other stretcher bearers in the Battalion, he was wounded at Serre on the 1st July 1916. He was shipped back to England, receiving treatment for his wounds at a hospital in Southport.
Richard was born in Wheelton in 1895, one of three sons to Jane and Richard Snape. In 1901 he was living with his parents at 23 Meadow Street in Wheelton but by the time he joined the Pals they were living at Kenyon Lane in Heapey. Richard worshipped at St. Chad’s R.C. Church at South Hill in Whittle-le-Woods and worked in textiles at Victoria Mill in Wheelton.
He married Clare Westhead, the sister of fellow Chorley Pal, Wilfred Westhead, in 1927; Richard died on the 1st September 1952.
