Born at Whittle-le-Woods, nr. Chorley on the 22nd November 1896, Tom (Thomas) was one of 12 children to Richard and Annie Ainscough. He attended St. John’s Church and worked in textiles at Kem Mills in the village. Tom enlisted at Chorley on the 22nd September 1914, being wounded in the chest during the attack on the Somme on the 1st July 1916. He was transferred to 17th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment as Private 39692 and then to the 6th [TF] Battalion of the Royal Wiltshire Regiment as Private 47868, leaving the Army on the 26th February 1919. Tom married Lucy Ormerod in 1925 and died in 1983.
