William Bretherton enlisted at Chorley on the 16th September 1914, being killed at Serre on the morning of the 1st July 1916.
Having no known grave, William is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
He was born in Aughton near Ormskirk in 1875, the son of James and Elizabeth Bretherton. William married Maggie Shaw at Wigan in 1909 and they lived at 18 Livesey Street in Chorley (there is no record of them having any children); he attended St. Laurence’s Church and worked as a Collier at Chorley Colliery.
Other Information: The CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) have William listed as being aged 31 when killed in 1916.
