CANNON, William Pte. 15160

William Cannon was single and aged 24 when he was wounded at Serre on the 1st July 1916.

He lived at Whittle Springs on the border of Wheelton and Whittle-le-Woods, attending St. Chad’s R.C. Church at South Hill, Whittle-le-Woods. William worked in textiles at Victoria Mill in Wheelton and in early 1918 married Frances Cuerden, the sister of Chorley Pal, Austin Cuerden.

Born in Mottram in Cheshire in 1892, William was one of six children born to Thomas and Mary Cannon. They cannot be found on the 1901 Census but the 1911 Census revealed them living at Waterhouse Green in Whittle-le-Woods; William was working as a Labourer in a Calico Works.

He died in 1966, aged 74.
