Joseph Enderby enlisted on the 21st September 1914, serving in the Machine Gun Section.

He was killed at Serre on the 1st July 1916, aged 23 and having no known grave is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Joseph was born in Chorley in 1894, the son of John and Mary Enderby – they had six children and the 1911 Census had them living at 40 Geoffrey Street in the town. However, by 1914 he was living at 16 Rydal Place in Chorley, attending St. Gregory’s Church on Weldbank. A single man, Joseph worked as a Piercer at Talbot Mill, Bagganley.

His younger brother, William, was killed in action (aged 19) on the 18th November 1917 serving as Private 201642 with the 1st / 4th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment; he is also commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
