James Makinson was born in Adlington near Chorley in 1897, the son of James and Annie.
Before joining the Pals he worked as a Collier at Ellerbeck Colliery and worshipped at Sacred Heart Church in Chorley.
A single man, his parents were known to live at 72 Bolton Road in the town.
He was wounded at Serre on the 1st July resulting in him losing a leg. James died of his wounds in No. 1 General Hospital at Etretat, north of Le Havre on the 9th July 1916; he is buried in Etretat Churchyard.
