Richard Pendlebury is buried with an unknown soldier in a grave at Queen’s Cemetery at Serre, being killed in action during the attack on the 1st July 1916; his death being recorded in April 1917, probably when his body was recovered (having lain in No Man’s Land for some ten months).
Richard was born in Chorley in 1895, the youngest of six children born to Robert and Esther Pendlebury (nee Tootell). In 1901 he was living with his widowed mother at 10 Sutcliffe Street and by 1911 was at 15 Queen Street in Chorley. A single man, Richard worked at Chorley Bleachworks and lived at 33 Bolton Street prior to enlisting with the Pals; he attended St. George’s Church.
