George Pilkington

George Pilkington was born in Chorley in 1896, the youngest of four children. He lived at 95 Heapey Road in 1911 and was there upon enlisting in the Pals in 1914. A single man, he worked at Heapey Bleachworks and attended St. James’ Church in Chorley.

George was wounded in the arm and shoulder during the attack at Serre on the 1st July 1916, being treated at Helsby Hospital in Cheshire. He was then transferred to the 8th Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment, serving with D Company when he died of wounds at No. 2 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) at Outtersteene on the 20th December 1917.

George is buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery near Bailleul in northern France.
