RATCLIFFE, Frederick Sgt. 16019

Frederick Ratcliffe

Frederick Ratcliffe

Frederick Ratcliffe was born in Adlington near Chorley in 1890, the son of George and Mary; he was the eldest child, having four sisters and one brother. The 1911 Census had the family living at 26 Chorley Road in Adlington and Frederick worked as a Joiner. Upon joining the Pals he was working as a joiner at Makinson’s in Horwich and living at 66 Railway Road in Adlington, attending St. Paul’s Church in the village.

He served in the Pioneer section of the Pals, digging trenches and burying the dead – he apparently kept a record of where he buried each Chorley Pal (sadly this is no longer in existence).

After the war he went working in Barnsley in South Yorkshire where he married and settled down; he died on the 31st December 1955.
