Leonard Saunders was born in Horwich in 1890, the younger brother of fellow Chorley Pal, James Saunders. He joined up on the 23rd September 1914 – his brother, James, the day after.
Leonard was single and lived with his parents at 9 Ingleborough View in Withnell working at Marriage & Pinnock cotton mill, a few yards from his home. He attended St. Paul’s Church in Withnell and played football for their team.
Leonard was killed in action at Serre on the 1st July 1916 and has no known grave, being commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
