Joseph Sutton

Joseph Sutton was the son of Joseph and Ellen Sutton, being one of five children born to them at Wigan; he was born there in 1886. In 1901 he was living at Chapel Lane in Coppull, working as a Coal Miner. By 1911 he was still working in a Colliery and living at New Row in Chapel Lane at Coppull, along with his brother-in-law John Lawrenson who was wounded at Serre with the Chorley Pals on the 1st July 1916 and died on the 4th.

Joseph married Ellen Tootell, sister of fellow Chorley Pal William Tootell at St. George’s Church, Chorley in 1915.

He was still with the Chorley Pals in the spring of 1917 as he saw the graves of William Tootell and fellow Coppull ‘Pal’, Seth Rollins, in No Man’s Land at Serre.
