Herbert Unsworth

Herbert Unsworth

Herbert Unsworth was a shot in the neck getting out of a trench at Serre on the morning of the 1st July 1916; he was a Cook but had asked to take part in the attack. Herbert was killed outright but his body was never found – he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Born in Duxbury near Chorley in 1882, Herbert was one of six children born to Sarah A. and Edward Unsworth. In 1901, he was working in a Cotton Mill but upon enlisting in the Pals in 1914 he was working at Birkacre Colliery.

He married Sarah Ellen (Helen) Wane at St. George’s Church in Chorley during 1909; they eventually had three sons and were living at 9 Beacon Street in the town during the war. Herbert was known to have attended both St. George’s and Trinity Wesleyan churches.
