John Ward is on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme along with his brother, Richard. John was killed at Serre on the 1st July 1916 with the Pals, whilst Richard was killed on the 30th attacking the village of Guillemont serving as Private 18117 in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers.
John Ward was born to his parents Alice and Thomas in Blackburn in 1895, being one of ten children. The family were living at 167 Dukes Brow in Blackburn and by 1911 were at 64 Cowell Street in the town; John was working as a Cotton Weaver. Upon enlisting in the Pals John was living with his parents at 2 County Terrace at Clayton-le-Woods, working at Swansey Mill and attending St. John’s Church at Whittle-le-Woods.
