
Wilfred Westhead
Wilfred Westhead was born in Whittle-le-Woods in 1894, the son of James and Ellen, and was one of six children. In 1901 they were living at Town Lane in Whittle and by 1911 they were at Luke’s Row in the village. Wilfred worked as a Labourer in a bleachworks but upon enlisting was the Coachman for the village Doctor. He attended St. Chad’s R.C. Church at South Hill in Whittle-le-Woods.
He was transferred to the 8th Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment, possibly after being wounded, but returned to the Pals to see out his Army service. He later became the brother-in-law of fellow Chorley Pal, Richard Snape.
Wilfred Westhead died on the 9th May 1980, aged 86; his medals were presented to Astley Hall.
