Clarence Widdop

Clarence Widdop

Clarence Widdop was born in Leeds in 1898 and is buried in Serre Road No. 3 Cemetery at Serre, sharing a grave with Private 15/1327 William Stewart of the 15th West Yorkshire Regiment – The 1st Leeds Pals; both were killed in action on the 1st July 1916, although their bodies were not laid to rest until spring 1917.

Clarence was one of four children born to Elizabeth Anne and Henry Widdop, living at Brighouse in Yorkshire in 1901. Ten years later, the family had moved to 57 Lyons Lane in Chorley and Clarence was still at School; the family worshipped at Trinity Wesleyan Church in the town.

He joined the Pals at Chorley on the 14th September 1914 (he was probably just 17).
